Hi, I'm Lavanya

Moments before my seventh grade science fair, I was in the bathroom, panicking because I just couldn't do it. I wasn't a good talker, I wasn't a good communicator, and I had lost all confidence before walking into the judging room.

And yet, to me, someone labeled as "shy" since my childhood, talking about my project (a materials science project, using novel organic materials for medicinal applications), came naturally. Whether I was faced with intimidating judges or scientific professionals, I was never afraid of talking about my project, because I was so immersed in it and knew exactly what to say. It all came so naturally that my shaking leg, clammy hands, and anxiety-induced headache were nowhere to be found. Gone was the nervous, impressionable girl, and in her place was someone confident of herself and the project she'd spent months on.

Since then, I've been exploring the world of science, and finding a little bit more about not only science, but also myself, everyday. I find that I love the intersection of biology and materials science, and progress in these fields seemed to be especially efficient using computational methods. I find that I still am an introvert and keep to myself for the most part, but find it impossible to stay silent or not get involved when my scientific interests are brought up in conversation. Scientific communication is my passion and purpose. In fact, I have so many bubbling ideas and excitable theories about science that I've started my very own blog, in an effort not only to further improve one of my best skills (scientific communication) but also engage with an equally excited audience, and create a safe digital space for everyone, especially minorities.

I share my perspective on STEM through the lens of my niche scientific passion: computational biomaterials science. But I explore all ideas, ranging from AI, biology, materials science, lifestyle habits, the news, and some music, movies, and books (because why not?) I hope to create a welcoming community of curious minds. Feel free to reach out at lavinthelab@gmail.com

The name of my blog is composed of two things: my nickname and my favorite place to be.

"Lav" (a nickname I got in middle school - one that I initially disliked for the simplicity of it, but soon grew to adore as it represented the straightforwardness and succintness with which I go about my day), and "lab" (a reference to my love for STEM and exploring science in the lab) come together to create lavinthelab, a blog for individuals interested in STEM all around the world.
